Since the late 1980s, Christian Philipp Müller’s artworks have updated artistic models of historical conceptualism and institutional critique on the basis of an expanded notion of site-specificity. His works are recognised for their rigid yet humorous methodology: the context of an artwork providing the departure point for its production. For Müller’s first institutional solo show in Brussels in 1991, the Berlin and New York-based artist used an auction house in the museum to reflect on “fixed values” in contemporary art by offering souvenirs of his former performances for public sale. Müller’s works have been developed for numerous international exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and documenta in Kassel. [Last updated 2010]
