49th Venice Biennale: Plateau of Human Kind

Harald Szeemann, Cecilia Liveriero Lavelli, and Lara Facco

        Electa 2001

      1. Catalog accompanying the 49th Venice Biennale, Plateau of Humankind, curated by Harald Szeemann, Giardini (and other venues) Venice, 10.06.2001–04.11.2001. This was the second of two iterations of the Biennale that Szeemann curated. Szeeman linked the title, nebulous as it was, was to the 1950s Family of Man exhibition, aiming for an inclusiveness that he acknowledged was probably a fantasy ‘despite faith in globalisation and the breaking down of walls.’ Szeeman’s exhibition championed a kind of autonomous artistic freedom and creative expression. Exhibited artists included: Chantal Akerman, Josef Dabernig, Stan Douglas, Laura Horelli, Abbas Kiarostami, Jeff Koons, Ernesto Neto, Carsten Nicolai, Paul Pfeiffer, Neo Rauch, Gerhard Richter, Santiago Sierra, Nedko Solakov, Keith Tyson, Eulalia Valldosera, Francesco Vezzoli, Bill Viola, Jeff Wall, etc.
