Publication accompanying the 4th Berlin Biennale, entitled Of Mice and Men (25.03.–05.06.2006), curated by Maurizio Cattelan, Massimiliano Gioni, and Ali Subotnick. The exhibition, which included works by over 70 artists spanning a number of generations, was held in KW Institute for Contemporary Art and 11 other venues along Auguststrasse, making up a kind of “street fair” of diverse exhibition spaces. The show, which took its title from a John Steinbeck novel, was meant to, in the words of the curators: “… stage a theater of the absurd, in which animals, humans and ghosts all play their tragic parts. But it is also a day in life of the inhabitants of a street and a stroll along the spaces that punctuate our existence.” Remembered by many as one of the “best” Berlin Biennales, it was nevertheless criticized for the superficiality of many art works and for the way that the exhibition at times aestheticized Berlin’s history without confronting the political implications of such choices (the use of a former Jewish Girl’s School as an evocative-ruin-turned-exhibition venue was seen by some as particularly questionable). The book contains information on each exhibited artist and other documentary material.
