Spivak’s seminal essays on imperialist discourses and the relationship between Western ‘elite’ or ‘canonical’ culture and that of post-colonial nations, especially those in the South. Here Spivak makes use of philosophy, history, and literature to chart the shift from colonial to transnational culture in light of the recent effects of globalization, and argues for a more politicized, critical post-colonial discourse. See in particular the very well-known essay ‘Can the Subaltern Speak?.’
