A history of the open-air Sonsbeek International Sculpture exhibitions, ten editions of which have taken place at irregular intervals since 1948 in a park in Arnhem, NL. The Sonsbeek exhibitions have been important in defining certain contemporary currents in the relationship between sculpture and art in the public space. The editions curated by Jan Hoet, Sonsbeek 9 (2001) and Valerie Smith. Sonsbeek 8 (1993) are considered particularly influential.
