Manifesta 8. The European Biennale of Contemporary Art: Region of Murcia (Spain) in dialogue with Northern Africa

        Milan Silvana Editoriale 2010

        ISBN 9788836616978

      1. Catalog accompanying the eighth edition of Manifesta, a nomadic European Biennale of Contemporary Art, which took place in numerous venues in the cities of Murcia and Cartagena (09.10.2010–09.01.2011). Shifting from the founding narrative of Manifesta as the quintessential post-1989 biennale committed to bringing together artistic practices from the West and the former East, this iteration claimed to engage with the North-South divide, specifically in relation to southern Europe’s proximity to northern Africa (though the extent that the exhibition did so (beyond the simple fact of its geographical location) is the source of some debate). This Manifesta was curated by three curatorial collectives, working separately to realize independent exhibitions: Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum, Egypt (curator: Bassam El Baroni); Chamber of Public Secrets (Scandinavian countries, Italy, U.K, and Lebanon) (curators: Khaled Ramadan and Alfredo Cramerotti); and tranzit.org (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia) (curators: Vít Havránek, Zbynek Baladrán, Dóra Hegyi, Boris Ondreička, and FW researcher Georg Schöllhammer). Exhibited artists included: Marcelo Expósito & Verónica Iglesia, Adela Jušic, Hassan Khan, Heman Chong, Wooloo, Metahaven, The Otolith Group, etc.
