Buruma and Margalit’s unusual approach to analyzing the concept of the West from the perspective of a number of ‘Easts’ is extremely productive. They take various (mis)conceptions about the West and deconstruct them, pointing out their relationship to European romanticism, among other traditions. Of particular interest for FORMER WEST is their discussion of Russia’s conflicted relationship with the West.
