This book, originally published in France in 1998, can be read as a kind of mad, postmodern anti-Fukuyamian work. In opposition to an ‘end of history’ hypothesis, Virilio argues that the post-1989 condition is one in which the US is waging a never-ending information war upon the globe (a ‘cybernetic colonization’), which drives a new age of globalization and possibly totalitarian control. Provocative as always, Virilio’s analysis is wide-ranging, touching upon everything from the human genome project and the Sensation exhibition to biotechnology and pop culture.
