Catalog accompanying the exhibition Unpacking Europe, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, curated by Salah Hassan and Iftikhar Dadi (13.12.2001–24.02.2002), which showed work by African and Asian artists living in Europe who reflected on ‘western norms’ in art, the meaning of Europe today, and the persistent division between the ‘West’ and the ‘non-West.’ An example of the proliferation of exhibitions in the late 1990s/early 2000s that sought to engage with notions of identity, multiculturalism, and postcolonialism, with varying degrees of sophistication and success. Exhibited artists included: Heri Dono, Coco Fusco, Fiona Hall, Isaac Julien, Ken Lum, Johannes Phokela, Anri Sala, Yinka Shonibare, Nasrin Tabatabai, Shi Yong, etc.
