Dreamworld and Catastrophe: The Passing of Mass Utopia in East and West (2000)

        Susan Buck-Morss

        Cambridge, Mass.: MIT Press 2002

        ISBN 0262523310

      1. Buck-Morss offers an analysis of East and West as two sides of the same coin of modernity, presenting a kind of alternative Cold War history: ‘Against the often-repeated story of the West’s winning the Cold War, these essays argue that the historical experiment of socialism was so deeply rooted in the Western modernizing tradition that its defeat cannot but place the whole Western narrative into question.’ An experimental writing style is accompanied by many images from visual culture and a narrative that shifts from the highly theoretical to the personal, as the author recounts her experiences working in Russia during the years surrounding 1989.
